Kacey Musgraves' Pageant Material picks up where her striking debut left off: in a small town. Album opener "High Time" takes on a '70s countrypolitan feel, complete with strings, handclaps, and Musgraves' signature double-entendres. That this is a pro-pot smoking wink-and-nod isn’t hard to miss (“It’s high time, to slow my roll, let the grass just grow, and lean way back”). She does best when poking fun at things closest to her, and sometimes that means herself. On "Dime Store Cowgirl," she sings of getting "too big for my britches," and on the title cut, she confesses she "ain't exactly Miss Congenial," before concluding, "it's not that I don't care about world peace, but I just don't see how I can fix it in a swimsuit on a stage."
